The foot has irregularly shaped tarsal bones which form the foot's arch and serve as a shock absorber. A network of muscles, tendons, and ligaments supports the bones and joints in the foot so that it can sustain enormous pressure and provide flexibility and resiliency. We differentiate between traversal and longitudinal arch.

Flatfoot is a condition in which the longitudinal arch in the foot, which runs lengthways along the sole of the foot, is lowered or flattened out. Constant standing, sport, overweight, carrying of heavy loads, ill-fitted footwear or innately week foot can all result in flatfoot.

Longitudinal flatfoot causes restrictions of basic functions of the foot arch, increased tiredness, burning and occasionally dull ache. This deformity is often accompanied by sudoresis, swelling and problems in blood circulation.

Traversal flatfoot is caused by putting extra weight on the traversal foot arch. As a result this arch declines, the flexibility worsens and pain in the area of the second and forth metatarsal head occurs. Traversal flatfoot is often caused by excessive wearing of shoes with high heels, which causes uneven distribution of pressure.
