Heel spurs are pointed bony outgrowths of the heel. Heel spurs can be located at the back of the heel or under the heel, beneath the sole of the foot or in the area of Achilles tendon. Heel spurs cause tenderness and pain at the back of the heel made worse while pushing off the ball of the foot.
These places have to take a lot of pressure and in combination with instep deformation or inappropriate footwear can result in growths. In fact, these are the reactions of the body which in attempt to reinforce these parts releases calcium elements and thus growths occur.
The pain is often felt in lower or rear heel. Orthotic devices or shoe inserts are used to take pressure off heel spurs. Heel lifts can also reduce stress on the Achilles tendon and relieve painful spurs at the back of the heel.
